Macroeconomics Should Minimum Wage Be Raised - 823 Words

Macroeconomics is the study of the behavior of an economy at the aggregate level. Macroeconomics considers the industrial sector, the services sector or the farm sector, but not specific parts of any of these sectors. The factor studies might include inflation, unemployment, and industrial production, often with the focus the effect of government policy on these factors. That leads me to an article that I read in Businessweek titled Making the Economic Case for More Than the Minimum Wage, written by Peter Coy on February 13th, 2014. The article starts with talking about President Obama’s 2014 State of the Union address calling for an increase in the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour. There was also a reference in the 2013 State of the†¦show more content†¦They believe that labor laws distort the market and a free market provides the most opportunities for both consumers and producers. The article talked about the laissez faire case, that minimum wage is counterproductive. â€Å"It steals jobs from the most vulnerable people; those who could get hired a $5.00 per hour, but not at $7.25 or $10.10 per hour. Economic class teaches us and the article points out that setting the price of labor above if equilibrium level causes supply to exceed demand and will lead to more unemployment. Many people believe that having a â€Å"wage floor† is a job killer. The article states a 1994 study by David Card of the University of California at Berkeley and Alan Krueger of Princeton. Both compared employment at fast-food restaurants in the New Jersey area. They had enacted increases in the minimum wage and those similar restaurants in Pennsylvania keep their wages the same. The result was that no reduction in New Jersey employment. The article also talked about the Card-Krueger study. The most recent studies show that if there are negative effects on employment, they would be small. It showed that higher wages reduce turnover and increases job satisfaction. There is a cost to business with turnover. It can be a trade-off to pay a higher wage to avoid the cost associated with job searches and new employee education. : Inferno Essay : Inferno Dantes Inferno was a great epic poem of the early Renaissance. It was known for its astute commentary on political and religious levels, both deeply woven into the work through allegory. Inferno, written in 1314 by Dante Alighieri, was the first canticle of the Divine Comedy. Dante called it a comedy both because of its happy ending and its style, which lies between that of the tragedy and that of the elegy.(Vossler, 665) Although most respected writers of the time wrote in Latin, Dante wrote the Divine Comedy in the vernacular Italian language so that the common man could read it. The fact that this masterpiece was written in the vernacular helped elevate Italian as the written language of their new age. From the misery and corruption surrounding him in his beloved Florence, he wrote the comedy because he wished to show the path to goodness, the salvation of the human soul guided by both reason and divine grace. (Vossler, 665) Dante intended the work to be read on three levels: literal, allegorical, and moral. The work was structurally written in eleven syllable lines grouped in threes to make interlocking tercets. The rhyme scheme that he created f! or this is called terza rima(Vossler, 664), which forms the words in the pattern aba-bcb-cdc-ded and so on. These are grouped into conceptual units of 150 lines each, called cantos. The entire Divine Comedy has one hundred cantos, consisting of one introductory canto and three principal divisions(Vossler, 664) or canticles of thirty-three cantos each. In the spring of 1265 Dante was born to a modest noble Florentine family called Alighieri. Even though they were nobles, the family had lost its riches and high social stature through the generations. His mother died when he was young and his father is not often mentioned. He received a careful education, although little of it is known precisely. His familys modest social standing did not prevent him from pursuing his studies. Dante probably studied rhetoric with the scholar Brunetto Latini, from whom he says that he learned how a man becomes eternal(Inferno XV line 85). As a young man, Dante largely taught himself how to write verse, but he also studied with the great troubadours of Florence, writing to them and circulating his own love lyrics. In 1295 he began an active public life, and within a few years he became an important figure in Florentine politics. He joined the Guild of Physicians and Apothecaries in order to participate in government. Dantes time was one of great instability. Between 1215 and 1278 the Guelfs, with whom Dante sided, and the Ghibellines of Florence had engaged in a bitter struggle for power, the conflict revolving around the Ghibellines favor of a feudal aristocracy. The Guelfs finally prevailed. Around 1300, however, the Guelf party split into two hostile factions: the Blacks and the Whites. The Blacks, the faithful Guelfs, remained in control. The Whites eventually associated themselves with the Ghibellines. Dante, meanwhile, fought to preserve the independence of Florence, and repeatedly opposed the schemes of Pope Boniface VIII, who wanted to place Florence under the control of the church. By taking advantage of the unrest in Florence, Boniface attempted to take control of the city and undermine his opponents by promising protection to those who displayed some sympathy with his cause.(Bergin, 8). In the summer of 1300, Dante, as one of the six magistrates of Florence, opposed Boniface! . To show his displeasure Boniface wanted to excommunicate the members. Dante was saved from this fate only because his term of office was about to expire. The events, however, only served to worsen his already adverse opinion of Boniface. After the talks, Dante was retained and during his absence Charles of Valois entered Florence. The Blacks staged a revolution and gained complete control of the commonwealth. Dante returned to find himself exiled on puffed-up charges of embezzlement, opposition to the pope and his forces, disturbance of the peace of Florence,(Bergin 13) and a number of other transgressions. Dante always felt that his difficulties had been brought about by the trickery of Boniface, and this added to his continually ailing opinion of him. When Dante refused to answer to the charges against him, and when he did not pay the fine levied for his crimes, a second sentence was imposed: should he ever re! turn to the commune, he would be seized and burned alive.(Bergin 17) There is no evidence that Dante ever saw Florence again.In Dantes Inferno the two most vivid allegories are those of his journey as Everyman, and his commentary on the people and events of his time. In the first line, Dante awakens in the dark wood symbolizing the journey that every soul must make for salvation. Midway this way of life were bound upon,/ I woke to find myself in a dark wood,(Inferno I lines 1-2). The dark wood less represents a specific sin or perversion, but more a spiritual state called the hardness of the heart(Freccero 172) in which sinfulness has so taken the possession of the soul as to render it incapable of turning to God, or repenting. As Dante starts off on his journey he attempts to climb the mountain upon which he sees the suns shining, while behind him there is only the night. This ascent is path a soul takes to God once it is free of sin. His condition of hardness of the heart make the proper path up the mountain unavailable. As he tries to climb straight up the mountain, three beasts block ! his path: a leopard, a lion, and a she-wolf. These beasts are said to have a double symbolism. Allegorically, the leopard is worldly pleasure, politically it is the city of Florence, so given to worldly pursuits,(Freccero 174); the lion is ambition, politically the royal house of France, which sought to rule Italy,(Freccero 174); finally, the she-wolf symbolizes greed, and politically is the papacy(Freccero 174) which Dante viewed as an avaricious religious entity seeking more and more secular power. The non-political meanings of each beast block his path for salvation. Among the various religious and political allegories, Dante weaves in some of his personal secular views. Just as Dante passes through the gates of hell and enters the Vestibule, he starts to recognize the faces of spirits. Since the Vestibule is the realm of those with the cautious cowardice for which no decision is ever final,(Sayers 89), Dante finds Pope Celestine V. He says I saw and recognized/ The coward spirit of the man who made/ The great refusal;(Inferno III lines 59-61). The great refusal he mentioned is in reference to when Celestine gave up the papacy after 5 months because he couldnt handle the pressure. Dante is especially bitter towards Celestine, because Pope Boniface VIII was chosen to take his place after he left. Pope Boniface VIII had his place in Dantes hell, too. Dante travels through the Eighth Circle of Hell, which is generally viewed as the City in corruption: the progressive disintegration of every social relationship, personal and public.(Sayers 185). Despite increased participation in international markets, poor productivity and failure rates of expatriates remain very high. There are some major factors contributing to failure rates, these include but not limited to expatriates inability to adjust to foreign duties, inability to adjust to the new culture, the expatriates cannot adapt to new physical and culture surroundings. Expatriates spouse cannot adjust to new environments, language and family problems. Organizations must be diligent in their management of foreign base assignment. In addition to selecting the right person for the job, expatriates must also be properly prepared for life and work within the new culture through cross-cultural training. Also, expatriates should be provided with ongoing support while oversea s; and the organization must make it easy to repatriate employees to the firm once his or her overseas assignment is completed. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to review the existing literature on expatriates failure and the causes and how to reduce expatriates failure and ways to improve expatriates productivity. An expatriate refers to anyone living or working outside their home country (Kreitner, Kinicki and Buelens 2002) .According to (Mendenhall) the term expatriate failure means ending the international assignment before the contract expires. This is also the definition adopted by the two most important articles, in terms of citations by other authors (Harzing, 1995)] in the literature about expatriate failure rates: Tung (1981) and Mendenhall and Oddou(1985). Some authors do question the validity of this definition, even if they are not offering alternatives. An understanding of expatriate failure as underperformance, or similar, during the assignment is also unfolding, and some contributions include repatriate turnover (expatriate leaving the company shortly after repatriation) and repatriation problems. However, what has been missing in some of the journals used so far is a critical, systematic and integrated approach to these various definitions. Cross-cultural adjustment of expatriates is an exclusive aspect of international assignments. Expatriates adjustment means living and working in a foreign culture environment . Adjustment to the new culture and copping with that culture is an integral part of expatriates success or failure. The level of comfort a person enjoys in his or her environment determines how far he can go in his foreign assignment (Black, Mendenhall, Oddou, 1991). When expatriates are not well prepared for the new environment on foreign land, there are tremendous consequences on the performance of the expatriates. It can cause an early withdrawal or total failure of expatriates. Work adjustment is clearly job-related, cultural adjustment is primarily nonwork-related, and interaction adjustment overlaps the work and nonwork environments.(Black). Several antecedents of these adjustment dimensions have been explained, but little has been done by the some writers to formally or clearly connect cross-cultural ad justment to expatriates early return decisions. Black and Stephens (1989) and Gregersen and Black (1990) found strong relationships between intent to stay and various dimensions of expatriate adjustment. Job satisfaction, however, was not a part of these analyses. Family context factors, expatriates spouses and family members have huge influence on the success or failure of the foreign worker. Two of the articles included nonwork-related factors in their models of turnover, but there is no agreement about how or where these factors have an impact on the process. Some suggest that nonwork factors influence turnover indirectly others depict nonwork factors as moderators of the job attitude intent to leave relationship (Steers Mowday, 1991) or as direct determinants of turnover (Price Mueller, 1986). Despite these theoretical considerations, only a few practical studies of organizational withdrawal have included family variables beyond marital status or number of children (e.g., Blegen, Mueller, Price, 1988). Findings have been generally weak or inconclusive. In a study by Riusala and Suutari (2000), some respondents had considered returning home early (i.e., not seeing their assignment through to its completion). However, most of these expatriates were wary of doing so because they believed that failure to complete the overseas assignment would adversely influence their career prospects back home. In fact, 31% of the respondents who contemplated an early return believed such a move would very negatively affect their career, and 45% believe it will negatively affect their career. Organisation need to offer some practical support, in order that they can be more productive ..Without these supports ,their performance will be low and turnover very low and the organisation profit margin will fall. Some stay for a few days, others a few weeks or months, and still others stay for a few years. All seek to achieve some task or mission of significance to the organizations they represent. Many fail to achieve the level expected of them from their organisations. Estimates of the number of international assignments ending in failure range from 25 to 50 percent. Moreover, estimates of failed assignments do not include instances in which the assignment was completed, but at a minimally acceptable level of performance. It has been estimated that an additional 30 to 50 percent of American expatriates stay in their international assignments, but are regarded as either marginally effective or ineffective by their organization. The expatriates to succeed on foreign duties, managers need to live within the foreign business arena for several years in order to gain the necessary experience. Unfortunately, overseas assignments are often ill-planned and disorganized, leading to poor job performance and or job displacement. The costs of failed expatriate assignments are high, therefore, both financially for the organization and from an individual career perspective. Rugby then has teams at year age groups from U12-U16, and then you have colts (17-19) these can also be played as individual age groups. After colts you have mens rugby this usually consists of a 1st, 2nd and 3rd team and the managers will select which you play for. : Local club/area  I live in Brackley in South Northants; we are surrounded by Buckingham, Banbury, and Towcester. There are many clubs in the local area, most of these are male clubs but there is one female club in Buckingham. I play for Buckingham RUFC U17. Most clubs all have youth and senior teams, most of the children who start of in the youth teams work there way up into the seniors. The rules of the game differ between the two sexes as well, for example in the mens game you can lift in the line outs and fly-hack, but in the female game you can do neither of these. This could be down to the men having a different build to the women, but in my opinion this is quit sexist, I believe that a sport that is enjoyed by the males should be enjoyed equally as much by the females at the same level with the same prospects. Provision for disabled participants- local/elite  Rugby for the disabled is a game that is played in wheelchairs. The game is played on a standard Basketball court using a volleyball, there is a goal at each end of the court. Wheelchair rugby is a game designed for tetraplegics or people with an upper limb impairment, and is open to people of all ages and both sexes. They have some of the sponsor that supports the mens rugby but not all of them. It also helped me to understand motivation and focusing on strengths and weaknesses of employees and how to communicate effectively and stay in control of a situation. Overall I felt that the preparation leading up to the meeting helped in all of these areas. Studying the theories of Herzberg and Maslow helped me to understand that key areas of motivation and how to incorporate key management skills in order to get the best performance from an employee. Through watching performance management films also during the preparation process, this helped me to focus on my body language throughout the meeting and ensure that I am being perceived in a positive manner and agreeing targets on equal ground not by being too controlling of the situation and forcing decisions upon the individual. What you have learnt from the feedback you have received from your tutor and the individual whom you reviewed I have learnt that I need to ensure to take notes during the meeting. This is especially important when discussing performance plans and setting agreements.
